It should do exactly what it was supposed to do - exactly as
described. It didn't for me at first...

I tried it and it /was/ affected by my address book template (for
TBUDL) but *not* by my default template (once I changed the address in
the mailto: link away from TBUDL).
Folder / default templates do not affect mailto links but address
templates seem to.

It should. It does for me. Check your address book for a rogue
template that may be affecting it.
