Allie Martin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Yes, I am using Zone Alarm 2.1.25. Based on the information provided by
you and Ming-Li Wang I suspect that this is the cause of my problem.
Thank you to both of you. Unfortunately, I am too tired to investigate
this theory right now.
I did not have the problem when using Netscape Messenger instead of TB!
I had thought that this indicated a problem with TB!. However,
Netscape Messenger might simply have been registered differently with
Zone Alarm than TB! If so the problem would be with Zone Alarm rather
than with TB!.
I did not have the problem when retrieving mail with POP3 from another
account. I had thought that this indicated a problem with GMX.
However, there is another explanation that puts the blame on Zone Alarm
rather than GMX: The other account that I had tried to retrieve E-Mail
from is a shell account. I had logged into it using ssh (Secure Shell,
which is a protocol supported, for example, by Van Dyke Technologies'
SecureCRT). I had used IP forwarding to encrypt SMTP and POP3 traffic
to the mail server and reroute it over the SSH channel. Thus my POP3
requests bypassed any bugs that Zone Alarm may have with respect to POP3
traffic.
