The plot thickens. I got this advice from someone much earlier
and it *did* in fact work. Not satisfied, I wrote to ZoneAlarm support
where they gave me the advice to add the TB! mail servers to the local
zone via the advanced security settings. Worked like a charm while using
the high internet security option.

Since X-Ray doesn't have any problems with ZoneAlarm, is very
easy to use, is stable and unobtrusive, and is designed to work with
TB!, I use it as a local server and have since removed the e-mail
servers from the local zone. TB! now interacts locally with X-Ray which
in turn interacts with my POP/SMTP server. I, however, use mainly one
POP and SMTP server each. My other account, I check only occasionally.
If you check multiple accounts regularly, especially with automated
checking, then X-ray is not so good a solution although it has the
ability to cycle through POP servers with each check.
