The decision was that subscribers not S/MIME sign their messages because
of the increase in message size involved when the signature is included.
The 3k per message seems small per message but on a large scale, ie,
when dealing with hundreds of messages, the 3k's per message adds up in
terms of server space, hard disk space and bandwidth wastage.
PGP is however allowed because of the negligible increase in message
size. If and when TB! supports S/MIME signing that does *not* involve
sending the S/MIME public key, then we'll have to review the decision.
There are those who are of the opinion that digitally signing public
list messages is superfluous or unnecessary. My response to them is not
to sign theirs then. If others wish to sign then by all means digitally
sign but with PGP, not with S/MIME for now.
