Well I personally don't. I have absolutely no idea what any of the regexp
gubbins is in any of the templates I use. It may all as well be written
in Swahili as far as I am concerned.
I just rip them off from other people. They are all published here very
frequently. People ask "How can I do this", someone sends a regexp or
other method of doing it and, just like many other people, if it's of any
use to me I copy it to my templates.
For example when you see a reply that is addressed to "Susanne on TB!UDL"
rather than just Susanne or TBUDL, I asked how it was done and good old
Allie sent me the regexp entry for my templates. I've been using it ever
since.

If you see something that you would like to know how to do, just ask. No
one on here keeps any secrets. There is no need to understand "How" it
works, as long as you find a way to actually get it work.
You have already said your overwhelmed by the amount of traffic on this
list. 99% of it is an attempt to help someone else in some way.
