That's interesting Dierk, seriously.

At school, when I did my typing classes, I was taught to insert two spaces. 
I'm in the UK (which despite some opinions from across the Channel is part
of Europe).  In those far off days (before The Beatles had first started
recording!) there were no PCs in schools, so I cannot say if things have
changed today.
