Hello Jeff & other fellow TB! Users,

Wednesday, November 01, 2000, you stated:

J> I have 3 ISP accounts, and I check mail for all 3 accounts
J> regardless which ISP I'm logged on at the time.

Of course.

J> Since these ISP's won't allow me to relay messages,

Then you have to use the smtp server of the active active account -
the account you need to send from.

J> I must set my active account to match the ISP I'm currently
J> connected to if I wish to send messages. This is ok, since I can
J> set a consistent reply-to address.

I would say it's *not* OK, and this is why. I'll use my own
situation as an example:

I have two ISPs, one of which won't let me use most smtp servers to
send through, nor will it relay. Your situation (as I understood it)
means that you can't send or reply to TBUDL unless you are hooked up
to ISP A, and can't when accessing via B or C. Most of my email is
from subscriber list based focus groups (like TBUDL, except in line
with what I do, rather than what I use to communicate with).

Some email is receive only (i.e. a news bulletin) but I *can't* use
an account that won't send from within the one ISP, if I *need* to
send from it. This means that I had to change my subscriptions and
open up a lot of email accounts (13), in order to find a few good
ones I could send from. (One account I can't use to send from is
being used only for receiving the self bcc's that are automatically
programmed into my templates).

The bad ISP (in the sense we're referring to) is from *this* account
- prodigy, which was bought by the man (who got it when he bought
Sears / Mexico) who bought Telmex, the public phone company when it
privatized, and one can spend a *lot* of time talking to their tech
support people on the phone, without getting anywhere (believe me, I
know), and this phone Co. even charges for local calls and 800
numbers. Still, with 136 nodes (+ 700+ more in the US) I need it,
since I work out of various locations and just pay once.

I say this because if your ISPs are subject to pressure or likely to
want to keep your business; to provide you with a good services and
cater to your needs, I suggest you discuss this with them. By rights
they *should* let you use any smtp server you configure your account
to (but are in fact blocking some domains, apparently. That's how I
understand it - if someone else had deeper insights as to the cause,
do speak up).

J> Since I can send work emails from either of these accounts, how
J> do I avoid setting up the same filtering rules for each account ?
J> I have it set so the dominant account contains all the folders (
J> with the messages ), and the other 2 accounts just have
J> inbox/outbox/sent & trash. Currently, I drag and drop the
J> messages in the send folder and drag them to the default send
J> folder, then manually filter that folder.

It's not clear to me what you want to do. To change the active
account, just right click on the active account shown at the bottom
of the message editor, 2nd block from the right, then select one.

J> My question is, how do you make filtering rules apply to ALL
J> accounts ?

Sounds like you want to do what I recently asked about (copy filters
across accounts).

Also, since you're filtering all messages to one main account, you
could filter to different folders in it and program the identity for
that folder as you wish (go to the folders properties, then choose
the identity tab - you can still change active accounts when
replying, as needed). I myself have long asked for a virtual account
column feature option. (maybe because I liked that in Calypso).
