Hi Nick,
On 22 May 2001 at 07:45:28 +0200 (which was 06:45 where I live) Nick

I used to do this regularly. I have a separate account called "Anti
Spam" in which my standard reply template is a formal "bounce"
message. I gave up on it in the end since I run my own local SMTP
server and could clearly see that only 1% of the bounces ever got
through. The return paths on most spam is completely invalid. If you
sent proper "bounce" messages, these would have had a null return path
and you'd never have known how futile the gesture had been. I only
knew because I could see them sat in the retry queue and watch the
server fail to find a workable MX host to take the bounce messages on.
Instead of this I joined SpamCop and put the time and effort into
reporting every spam to them. That way, although I can't shut any of
the spammers down on a permanent basis, I know I am contributing to
their overheads and making many of them have to find new sites, relay
servers and ISPs.
