I had a similar problem and Max suggested the following:

M> Please try to move account.pfx and account.sce files from your

Just substitute my account address for the one you're having a problem
with. You'll have to re-export your cert to a text file and re-inport
it into The Bat's problem account after completing the above.

This cured my access violations when attempting to sign or encrypt,
perhaps it will fix yours.
