Border crossings were closed.  Borders themselves can't be closed;
there are thousands of miles of totally unprotected border between the
U.S. and Canada, not as much but a few spots between U.S. and Mexico,
and how many thousands of miles of ocean costline?

The U.S. is still what we (in the U.S.) like to call a "free country";
for example, the local base, which was the major staging point for the
other Bush's war, was still open to civilians Tuesday afternoon, and
hasn't been closed to civilians even once since; in fact there was a
small airshow there this past weekend.

This attack, as the one on Pearl Harbor, could have, and should have,
been foretold. For example, a few weeks earlier bin Laden (and yes, I
know we haven't proven yet it was he) had bragged about a forthcoming
attack on the U.S., and newspapers covered weeks (perhaps months; my
memory isn't that good when it comes to remembering time-frames)
before, that he was training pilots on Boeing aircraft.

As we've all said this time as well. It remains to be seen what GWB
would do about it. Obviously he hasn't (almost a week later) "nuked"
anyone.

But war is much harder to define these days.
