I've never taken any precautions other than the daily backup from TB!
to CD-RW (using Tools | Backup ...) which I'd do anyway.

All I do is rename the program file to THEBAT.BAK and copy the
beta THEBAT.EXE from the distribution archive into TB!'s home
directory. I've never had any difficulties with going between beta and
release versions, and have tested both 1.53 and 1.54 betas.
