GL> Personally, I find the mail ticker obtrusive, so I have TB set to play
GL> a sound when mail arrives and to show an animated icon in the System
GL> Tray.

This is exactly what I have. There is a disadvantage, however: For
e.g. mailinglists where you receive emails every few minutes but like to
check them only once in a while, it will get annoying to always here the
sound, especially because you don't know if it is a personal email or one
from the mailinglist. You can disable the sound for certain folders, that
works fine, but as far as I know it is not possible to disable the animated
icon for certain folders only. So my solution was to mark new messages in
these high traffic mailinglists as read immediately, so that the animated
icon still shows me when new personal mail has arrived. This disadvantage
is that now I can't see in the mailinglist folder which emails are new and
which ones not.
Is there a better solution? I know I could flag all these new messages, but
then I would have to manually deflag them when I read them, right?
