Personally, I've disabled the animated icon since it cannot be made to
selectively animate. It will animate once there's an unread message
anywhere and this setup I find to be very limited in scope. It would be
nice to be able to make it animate on a per account and per folder
basis, pretty much like the sounds.
The ticker is more useful. You can set it to appear for unread messages
on a per folder basis and also based on message ages. In this way I've
configured things so that the ticker appears only when personal messages
to me arrive. Never for list or other subscription based mail.
I've configured the ticker to use a small font and made it as narrow as
possible. It is therefore quite unobtrusive and only serves as an
indicator that I have personal mail to read.
