It seems to me that

   A1 | A2

        reads:

              {A1 followed by space} OR {space followed by A2}

Is that what you meant, or have you inadvertently a space to each of
the two strings being ORed?

Did you forget to check the Rule is Active box?

Someone else posted the procedure recently. I used it and it works.
You might want to try the following procedure.

1. Copy a string of bad characters from wherever you wish to look for
them in future messages (he recommended and I used the subject).

2. For convenience, open a new message and paste the characters into
it. Edit delete any characters in the string that you may wish to
delete. Separate the characters with | but do not add spaces to the
single character strings you are ORing.

3. Copy the string from the message.

4. Close the message.

5. In The Bat! screen select the account you want to filter.

6. Shift + Cntrl + S to open the Sorting Office.

7. Paste the separated string on the line under Strings.

8. Indicate the Location (I used Subject).

9. Indicate that Presence is yes.

10. Check Active.

I think that should do it.

In the event that a message slips by your rule, copy more characters
and add them, separated by | to the list. (I was lucky, my first
group of characters killed all the messages I tried to get rid of.)
