Well, they don't have to. If you use OE (and I guess it's the same with
Outlook, don't know about AOL) and you are using HTML formatting, then
there's a button to create a link. This will take care of the <a
href=...> stuff, so you don't have to matter about it. So I still think
that it's preferable not to make an address clickable if this was not
intended by the original creator. But that's just my $0.02.

Agreed, the PTV makes recognized addresses clickable. But on the other
hand, how would you code an address in plain text?
