I've just tried this and got an "abstract error" message. Searching
Help tells me that I can only import certificates if I'm using the
internal implementation. If I switch to the internal implementation, I
can download the certificate, but the signature still appears as
invalid.

AFAICT, S/MIME is completely broken in my installation of TB! because
all signatures appear as invalid no matter which implementation I use.
This includes signatures that appeared as valid in TB! 1.53d
