They crop up with some weird repeatable but incromprehensible things. For example, the email you may be retrieving may be just the right size to cause this issue. 1 byte smaller or larger and nothing happens. http://www.infinisource.com/techfiles/maxmtu.html#maxmtu has instructions for setting the Max MTU on your system. The smaller you set the Max MTU, the less likely you will have an MTU problem.
