I'd say it's a problem with secure connections. You see, to establish one, you need a server supporting it and the correct implementation incl. certificates. A feature of TB is to use the best secure method even if the server doesn't use it. But in one of the last versions that was changed to revert to the next possible authentication, AFAIK. When TB connects to one of my mail servers (don't know if it is POP or SMTP) the log always shows "unknown authentication method" but TB nonetheless connects.
