Unfortunately, I'm stumped. The test that I suggested uses an intrinsic method of the Word.Application object to check whether MAPI is correctly installed. The method failed, which may indicate that your Office installation is somehow corrupt. This may sound silly, but you could try using Remind Me (an excellent shareware calendar thingy from http://www.beiley.com/) to send a reminder email. If nothing else, that will tell you whether your problem is due to Office or MAPI. I tried checking the MS Knowledge Base for "MAPI" and "Run time error '438'" but didn't get anything that looked like your problem.
