Dear Fj, @28-Feb-2004, 19:02 +0100 (28-Feb 18:02 UK time) Frank J de Bruin [FDB] in mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] said to Marck:
MDP>> anyone threatening to leave *unless* it becomes a newsgroup or MDP>> ... a mailing list it will stay for the present and for the MDP>> foreseeable future... FDB> Threatening to leave is not a very strong argument, is it? Of course it is - when it's existing members saying "no" to a newsgroup. It's called "not alienating the existing user base". Threatening to leave if a certain change *does* take place is a fair thing to do. FDB> Having said that, I just note that a newsgroup would make the FDB> information provided by this list more useful and accessible to FDB> me. FDB> Someone mentioned a gateway or mirror. That sounded the best FDB> solution to me, it would cater for both desires. ... and I pointed out that the gMane solution was tried and caused said alienation. So it doesn't. Others have a completely paranoid fear of newsgroups. The presence of an email address in public newsgroups is a guaranteed way of getting your name in the 'millions of email addresses for sale' lists. Allie's suggestion of a secure, private NG is a good one, but I don't see any offers. -- Cheers -- .\\arck D Pearlstone -- List moderator TB! v2.04.7 on Windows XP 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 '
