There are public newsservers and there are private ones. Anyone can subscribe to any public server group and post there. This is where your e-mail address is vulnerable. There are servers where you have to subscribe and get a name and password to even view the posts there. The news server for MDaemon support is like that. You need a real e-mail address to get subscribed. Additionally services such as Gmane that mirrors list mail to NNTP offer e-mail address encryption. http://gmane.org/tmda.php The server can be made read only so that no one can post to it.
