Oh, if only it were so. I have tried manual and automatic
Compress/Purge and neither get rid of the message count.

This is actually very odd. I synch all folders and as I read the
messages it counts down until I get to 4 and then there are no more
messages unread. When it syncs again it shows the new messages and
then drops to 4 again as I read them. Any ideas.
