Earthlink informs me that they don't "support" The Bat! (which

I started a thread a couple of days ago on exactly this problem. I'm
glad it wasn't just me. Just below my signature is what worked for me,

Please join me on the list in encouraging Ritlabs to contact
Earthlink.

I can also send you screenshots as JPGs; they're about 125 KB each.

You will need to change the account properties in *each* account. You
will also need to look up your complete mail settings at

Right. It worked perfectly until Earthlink changed their mail settings
on 1 September. The problem is that since they don't support TB and
since the logical substitutions of new settings for old didn't work,
they wouldn't help me.

I tried my backup, Eudora. I don't use Microsoft e-mail clients on
principle. Eudora didn't work because I have 3.0. What Earthlink
didn't, wouldn't, couldn't tell me--because the help desk folks follow a
script and don't, won't, can't think outside the box--is that the new
settings have extra authorization requirements. I knew TB could handle
this and I reviewed the settings with "Rhoda" (not her real name), and
"Max" (ditto), who kept repeating the script:
Sorry, we don't support ... The Bat? Can you spell that please?
No, I don't know what "RFC 2554" means. Sorry, we don't support ...
The Bat? Can you spell that please?
They suggested that I start using Outlook. But I don't use Microsoft
e-mail clients on principle. We had a double circular discussion
going.

After experimenting with the mail settings, I am now able to download
as well as send. This seemed to happen spontaneously; I've no idea
how. Here are the settings that work:

  Account Properties
    Send mail
      SMTP Server smtpauth.earthlink.net

                Password **************
        ___ Require secure (MD5) authentication

      Mail Server pop.mindspring.com
      User username
      Password **************
      Connection Regular
      Protocol POP3
      Port 110
      Authentication
        _x_ Regular

        (token MD-5 CRAM-HMAC Challenge/Response greyed out)
___ Do not store password, prompt on mail retrieval

Hope this is helpful to someone else. Earthlink domain mail settings
(mine is Mindspring) can be looked up on their site.

I still think Ritlabs needs to contact Earthlink et al. and educate
them.

Cheers, and thanks for all the advice.

Subject: Help! Connection Centre--can't send or receive mail

HELP, please. I can't send or receive mail.

I have version 2.00.6l.

I've sent this via the Web and will have to deal with replies there, too, or by phone.
I can't be on the phone and online at the same time, but I would prefer to deal with
this by phone (just because it's faster than Web mail). If you're willing to talk me
through it, please send your phone number privately and a time when I can call you.
I'm in the U.S. (EDT).

Earthlink says they don't support The Bat and won't help me. They say this even though
I tried to download through Eudora and had the same thing happen. (However, it was
Eudora 3.0.5, which doesn't have a "use authentication" setting to tick--and I haven't
tried to send anything through Eudora.) They say this even though they've been my ISP
since 1995, when they ate Mindspring, which ate my original ISP, NandO.net, in 1994.
(Boy, do I miss the speed and simple elegance of Pine, Lynx, and a shell account ...
no bells and whistles, just the info you needed, fast and sleek.)

What's wrong with my mail settings? I don't want to know the theory behind it today. I
just want someone to tell me to go here and tick that, and type this here. I won't
remember the theory now--I'm too stressed out, with my mail box filling up and getting
ready to implode.

Also, is there a way to pause the dispatcher, so it doesn't have to load from scratch?
Is there a way to set the dispatcher to tell you when something has an attached file?
File size is not a reliable indicator. I'm also getting a lot of address
unknown--can't-read-the-header entries in the dispatcher list. Then I look on the Web
and they're perfectly respectable messages.

Getting mail problems
---------------------
My mail has been screwed up ever since Earthlink invoked new authentication settings
at the beginning of the month. I was able to get them working, briefly, about a week
ago, but I'm not sure what I did and they seem to have defaulted to their original
non-working state. How? It's a Mystery. (Or Something Happened when a friend
downloaded troops.mov and Quick Time to view it while I was sleeping. Watch this short
if you like Star Wars and are familiar with the TV show _Cops._) Mail dispatcher
works--I get the list--but when I start the download, it takes forever for the first
message, which is only 677 bytes, and then it bugs out before the end and closes.

Here's the Connection Centre script:
  receiving mail messages
  connected to POP3 server
  authenticated (plain)
1202 messages in the mailbox, 1174 new.
  Receiving message 1 of 1174 [682 bytes/ds]
[progress about halfway, takes two to three minutes/ds]
FETCH - Connection to host broken (last commands sent were:
    "DELE 1, RETR 2")

The first message downloads, but it stays on the server.

Sending mail problems
---------------------
Zero of however many bytes hangs on the screen for two to three minutes and I get this
message:
An encrypted email connection has been detected.
Please see help for more information on how to
  transmit encrypted email.
Then it doesn't go out, and I get this message:
Server reports error. The response is: TLS not available
  due to temporary reason.
I looked at the "help" file, tried what I could understand, but it didn't help.

If I go to my Webmail, I can manually delete the first message, then get the second.
However, this takes about ten minutes per message. I have dial-up and the Webmail
repaints the screen three times, and The Bat has to start from scratch with the
dispatcher. I have deleted as many messages as I can on the Web, but I still have more
than a thousand to go.

Earthlink's mail settings are appended.

Cheers,
Deborah Shaw

I'm not that familiar with the dispatcher as I've never used it.

DS> The first message downloads, but it stays on the server.

Since you're having trouble downloading, you could try to change your
settings to leave mail on server for 60 days (that's long enough to
leave your 30 days old mail in place), that way TB won't try to
download received messages again, you can do that at:
account -> properties -> mail management -> leave messages on server
As soon as you've downloaded everything, you could change your
settings back to 'delete received messages from server'

DS> Sending mail problems
DS> Server reports error. The response is: TLS not available

Account -> Properties -> Transport -> Send mail -> connection: regular
press the authentication button on the same screen
  check: Use SMTP authentication
  select: use mail retrieval settings

That's not practical. I can fill up the 10 MB allowed by my ISP in less than a week.
It got up to 77% capacity today (about 2,600 messages) and I whittled it down to 55%
by deleting some list mail unread and all spam. That took me two hours on the Web, and
I only read a few. My mail is mostly professional, though, and while I can delete some
of it, I am constitutionally unable to delete unread the most verbose culprit, CE-L.

DS> Also, is there a way to pause the dispatcher, so it doesn't have to load from

Roelof Otten> I'm not that familiar with the dispatcher as I've never used it.

I would REALLY like it if it were easy to process messages in groups of 200 or so. I
often have more than a thousand, especially when I'm on deadline and don't check my
mail for two or three days. One of the things I like about TB is being able to delete
the trash off the server.

However, on another account, I unticked "use POP before SMTP," and ticked "use SMTP
authentication," "use specific settings" (and put in mail address and password)--and
that worked for a test mail to myself. Or at least it SEEMED to. Still can't download.

Have you tried telnet? It's always my first step when having
problems like this.

POP:
telnet pop.mindspring.com 110
user [EMAIL PROTECTED]
pass <password>
stat //gives your message count etc.
list //lists all message # and size
retr # //download message #
dele # //delet message #
rset //reset all the things that you've done

SMTP:
telnet smtpauth.earthlink.net 25
...and then you'll have to google I'm afraid!

Hallo Deborah,

Roelof Otten>> ... you could try to change your settings to leave mail on server for
60 days ...
DS> That's not practical. I can fill up the 10 MB allowed by my ISP in less than a
week.

It wasn't meant as a permanent solution, but as temporary one, because
leaving mail on server keeps TB from downloading the same message
again when the download is aborted.

I didn't mention it in my previous message, but did you check whether
you've got a lot of bat*.tmp files in your temp directory? If so
delete them. They're generally caused by this kind of problems, but
they tend to worsen them too.

You've said that it's the second message that won't download. Is that
always the same message? (Since you've deleted quite a bit manually.)

What you could try too, is to disable both your virus scanner and
firewall (I presume that you're running a variety of both), just to
check whether one of them is causing problems with your download.

Finally you could try whether somebody else can download your mail for
you and put it in a .zip or .rar archive available for download. So
your mailbox will be empty since all possible obstructive mails will
be deleted. And you could try with a fresh box. Keep in mind that this
means that that other person will have access to your mail until you
change your password (if you can), so a certain amount of trust has to
be present.

DS> However, on another account, I unticked "use POP before SMTP," and ticked "use
SMTP authentication," "use specific settings" (and put in mail address and

One down, one to go.

DS> --

BTW, your signature delimiter is lacking its trailing space. I do
realize that you're using webmail (in spite of what you're stating
below), so you might not have sufficient control over what's being
sent, but nevertheless it's broken.

Or you could try something like Popcorn, which is a small email client
which works with mail on the server - a bit like an advanced Message
Despatcher.

There used to be a freeware version which unlimited accounts (which I
might be able to find and send you). It now costs USD20 and the
freeware version is limited to one account. Still useful for
emergencies, however.

You are referring to a bug that was fixed a long time ago. TB will not
download the same message again, even if you do not leave messages on
server. However, the message will not be deleted on the server unless
the download is finished with the QUIT command, but that's technical.

Referring to Deborah's other question: No, it is not possible to pause
the despatcher.

Last resort. I'm not willing to do that yet. I suspect Earthlink is
the culprit, but they deny it. Since they don't support TB (in fact,
have never heard of it), it's easy for them to deny. I think they
*should* support it. Ritlabs should contact them (and all other big

Penultimate resort. Or maybe not. I have a laptop, a wireless modem,
and a friend who has DSL and a wireless router. Hmmm.

At least I can send now.
