You seem to have missed "View modes". All of the settings you are
trying to affect are governed by view modes. You have to create view
modes for each different column arrangement you need and assign those
to their respective folders. Then, any changes you make to the layouts
will stick to the assigned view mode and confer on any other folder
using that mode.
