It's not wise to use the inbox as a main storage folder - it is high traffic. I keep mine empty. Once you have a good filtering system in place, inbound and outbound messages can be routed to specific folders for specific topics. For now, perhaps messages to/from known contacts should go to a general "Conversations" folder, just to keep them away from more general and random Incoming and Sent messages.
