But, would it be good for Avi to have to learn TB!'s IMAP in addition
to the steep learning curve that he faces in upgrading from 1.62r to
3.51.10?

Couldn't he stay with his more familiar POP3 accounts until he gets
acclimated and *then* try out TB!'s IMAP?
