Sounds like his e-mail addresses are ISP based. His ISP doesn't support
IMAP, so switching to IMAP would be a problem.

He could use an IMAP provider like FastMail and then have them poll his
ISP account for mail. However, this wouldn't be ideal since FastMail's
remote POP account poll frequency is hourly for an enhanced account.

An additional option would be to get one of those mail relaying tools. I
used one for a while. Essentially, it downloads your mail and relays it
to an alternate or alternate addresses of your choice.

If you have your own domain name then this isn't a problem since your
personal addresses follow you and are independent of ISP or email
provider.
