I understand your reservations and my intent isn't to get you to
change your behavior at all but only to inform you of the fact that
TinyURL has a feature called "preview" you can toggle on or off. When
it is toggled on, clicking on the TinyURL takes you first to the
TinyURL site where you can see the longer URL to which it points. You
then have the choice of whether to follow the link or not.
Unfortunately for the problem you are describing however, you can't
know in advance whether or not the person who sent you the TinyURL has
that feature turned on. In my case, I do, and I have asked my frequent
correspondents who use that system to please toggle the preview on.
