Where to start on this one...

"Bruce Drewlow sees more than beauty in the art he's bought for the halls of
Cowern Elementary School in North St. Paul. He sees harmony."
"North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale will spend about $70,000 this year on more
multicultural artwork and cultural artifacts to use in the classroom at each
of its schools, part of its $1.8 million state diversity allocation."

"About a third of this year's estimated $80 million in statewide
desegregation money will be spent in the suburbs.
Desegregation funding in the suburbs:
2000 - $238,075 or 0.4 percent of state desegregation dollars.
2004 - $26.9 million or about 34 percent of state desegregation dollars."

My comments:
First off, the only art I have ever seen in schools was the art that was
done "in house". Art that used tempra paint and tag board.

Secondly, we're talking a lot of money here, ranging from $130 per pupil in
the least diverse suburb to $480 per pupil in Minneapolis. It seems that
given the consensous that schools are hurting for money, that of this
desegragation funding could be better spent.
