I have always wanted to do technical writing, even before I knew what it was. When I went in to see my counselor at the end of my 2 years at the local junior college to find out what to major in, I gave a general idea of what I wanted to do, and he looked at me quizzically and said, "Journalism?"
I was pretty sure that wasn't it, so he started flipping through a large tome of majors, and ran across Technical & Professional Writing. It turned out that the only school in CA that offered a bachelor's degree in TPW was at San Francisco State University, a 2.5-hour bus ride away. I went for 4 semesters, spending 5 hours and $11/day on the bus.
After finishing the TPW program in 1995, I started tech writing. I have worked pretty continuously (with only one extended time between jobs, where it took 2.5 months to land the next job) since that time. I have found that I most enjoy writing documentation for developers, as I do programming "on the side," and know what *I* like to see when I'm reading develolper docs.
I'm considering pursuing a M.S. in Computer Science from College of Charleston as soon as my wife gets out of nursing school, and moving into full-time development.
