I currently work contracts out of my home office where I have access to three computers. I use a several year old 2.5 GHz P4 with a Gig of RAM, a couple of 80 GB hard drives and (sigh) only one 17 inch flat panel. (I'd like to up the RAM, but it uses older style RAM that cost up to $700 per Gig stick.) Next to that is a little bit newer 2.5 GHz P4 laptop with 512 MB of RAM and a 60 GB HD. If I need to run a process that hogs time (such as creating a PDF from a Word file using PDFWriter), I either run the process on the laptop or on my wife (new) computer, a brand new system with a faster than heck processor, gobs of hard drive space and a 17 inch flat panel. We're looking to upgrade both my desktop and laptop this year and turn my old desktop into a file server.
At a previous place of employment, I used a system that had two 10 Rpm SCSI hard drives in addition to 4GB of RAM (video productions)....talk about a screamer.
