NOTE: If you've not done this before, save a backup of the file you
intend to play with.

Actuellement, Sean's first suggestion was to save the file as MIF and
ONLY then open the file in notpad. 

After you make your edits,  save the MIF as a text file with the MIF
extension and close the file. Then, open the MIF file in FrameMaker (as
you would a binary FM file) then save the file as FM again.

This was interesting because I was just struggling with the very same
issue that Carla had.

I tried Sean's first suggestion and opened the Book file in Notepad and
then in WordPad. Unfortunately, all the strange characters made it
impossible to remove the two tags that I was trying to delete from the
Book file without corrupting the Book file.

So, now that I've heard Carla's success story, I'll create a new b
