You will have to check with your local unemployment agency about
collecting. I can't remember how it works off-hand, as I'd jumped to
independent consulting as quickly as possible (pays better than
unemployment, and less bullshoy to deal with).

I can't help with the business end of things, unfortunately. But I
certainly know the emotional (and financial) rollercoaster that a
layoff can create. I was laid off 3 times in 2 years' time. Yay
dot-bomb era and telecomm bubble burst. Not fun.
