That "50 years" comment jarred with me too and the article and author lost credibility at that point.
Interestingly, I'm currently reading "The short life and long times of Mrs Beeton" where it's obvious that technical writing was in existence for much longer than 50 years. According to this book, Mrs Beeton plagiarised enormously from earlier household management and cookery books. Considering her tome was first published in the 1860s, and that her husband's publishing house dealt with many 'how to' books and pamphlets, it's obvious that tech writing in one form or another has been around for a long time.
