I agree here. Whether it's length, organization, layout, or what have you... if I can't give the resume a quick scan, it usually doesn't rank high on my list. I'm not currently in a hiring role, but whenever I do hire writers, I treat the resume as an example of their writing skills. If it's overly wordy, poorly organized, is littered with errors, or is otherwise ineffective, I see that as an extension of their skills as a writer.
