Hello.
I started in 1978, in West Palm Beach, Florida. After ten years in, and 8 years flying as a pilot for, the US Air Force I went back to school and got a BS Degree in Programming. I immediately found a job with a local company that consulted with the FAA, for whom I programmed and wrote technical documentation, and was the company pilot. >From there I went to IBM, in Boca Raton, Florida, as a technical writer, later a manager of technical writers. I took an early retirement after 14 years and began freelancing as a technical writer and working through some agencies as a contractor. I now am the Information Development department for Cross Match Technologies in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. I write manuals and online Help for hardware and software biometric capture products (digital fingerprint scanners, iris scanners, palm print scanners). It's interesting, and topical, work and I'm pretty much my own boss. I bring in a contractor to help with high pressure periods. They seem to come more and more often these days. I have a MA in Communication from Barry University in Miami, Florida and won the STC International Competition once (1983) with a user manual for an IBM product, as well as numerous state and regional awards through the years. Our newest focus is converting our present manuals and writing our future manuals in Controlled English (see www.smartny.com <http://www.smartny.com/> ) to make accurate translation easier and more affordable. We have an even more fierce focus on writing lean, direct technical text. It can be done and it translates extremely well. I work in FrameMaker. I'm happy to be on the list.
