I wonder if the application executable associated with your Excel files has been redirected.
Do this. Do right-click Start, and click on Explorer. Navigate to one of your .xcl files in some directory. On the top tool bar, click on Tools> Folder Options. In the window that comes up, click on File Types, and then scroll down to the XLS entry. Make sure it is associated with the application called "Microsoft Excel Worksheet." If it's not use the "Change" button to select it. Hope this helps (and that you're on Windows XP in case it makes a difference as to where to check the file associations).
