Good Thoughts for the Day
Life is like a jigsaw puzzle, but you dont have the picture on the front of
the box to know what its suppose to look like. Sometimes youre not even
sure you have all the pieces.

=====================================
Tip of the Day
Provided by Mrs. ABC's Spelling and Phonics Curriculum site at
http://www.mrsabc.com.
(Thank you for allowing us to use your tips of the day.)

Magnetic letters through the years have been proven a very popular way to
practice spelling words. Children may use a safe metal surface (filing
cabinet/ refrigerator door/ cookie sheet) to display the words they are
learning. This is also a fun way to display the spelling list they may be
working on.

The cornerstone for the Smithsonian Institution was laid.

History of the Smithsonian
The Smithsonian is an Institution rich in history and tradition. From the
original bequest of James Smithson in the 1830s through the establishment
of sixteen national museums and the Zoo, it has zealously pursed its twin
goals to increase and diffuse knowledge. The Institution stands as one of
the nations premier storehouses of information and historical record.

The Empire State Building
Without a doubt the most famous building in New York, if not the world, the
Empire State Building soars more than a quarter mile into the Manhattan sky,
offering visitors breathtaking views from both the 86th floor and 102nd
floor observatories. On a clear day visitors can see up to 80 miles, viewing
the states of Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, as
well as New York. Since its construction in 1931, this National Historic
Landmark has been visited by more than 117 million people -- greater than
the population of most countries.

More than 2 dozen tornadoes hit the midwest.

Tornadoes
Tornadoes form from severe thunderstorms. They have a very high energy
density which means that they affect a small area but are very destructive
to that area. They also don't last very long which makes it hard to learn
about them. Since they're hard to study, they're also hard to forecast.
People know even less about tornadoes, which is why there are a lot of
different myths that aren't true. Tornadoes can occur anywhere in the world.
About 75% of them happen in the United States, most in an area know as
Tornado Alley.
http://www.windows.umich.edu/earth/Atmosphere/tornado.html

Tornadoes
Tornadoes are one of nature's most violent storms. In an average year, 800
tornadoes are reported across the United States, resulting in 80 deaths and
over 1,500 injuries. A tornado is as a violently rotating column of air
extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. The most violent tornadoes are
capable of tremendous destruction with wind speeds of 250 mph or more.
Damage paths can be in excess of one mile wide and 50 miles long.

All About Tornadoes
What is a tornado?
A tornado is a violent rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm
to the ground. The most violent tornadoes can produce massive destsruction
with wind speeds of 250 mph or more. Damage paths can be more than 1 mile
wide and 50 miles wide. The typical tornado moves from southwest to
northeast, but they have been known to move in any direction. The average
forward speed of a tornado is 30 mph but it may vary from stationary to
70mph. Although tornadoes occur in many parts of the world, they are found
most frequently in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains during the
spring and summer months. In an average year, 800 tornadoes are reported
nationwide, resulting in 80 deaths and over 1,500 injuries.
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/torn.htm

Tornadoes - Great Pictures of tornadoes are on the page.
Tornadoes are a mystery not only to everyday people like you and I, but they
are also a mystery to scientists. Scientists cannot predict when these
forces of nature will strike. There are different types tornadoes, and they
are distinguished by the amount of wind speed they omit. They are the
killers of an average of 91 people a year in this world. About 1000
tornadoes occur each year around the world, and each one could be a killer.
Most of these tornadoes occur in the Tornado Valley, which is out in the
western Plains. It is favorable there because of the low moisture and warm,
dry air. Tornadoes are one of the worlds strongest forces, and they will not
stop at anything that will get in their way!

Today is May Day.
May Day, name popularly given to the first day of May, which for centuries
has been celebrated among the Latin and Germanic peoples. May Day festivals
probably stem from the rites practiced in honor of Flora, the Roman goddess
of spring. May Day is currently celebrated as a festival for children
marking the reappearance of flowers during the spring. It is traditionally
greeted with joyous dancing around a garlanded pole, called a maypole, from
which hang streamers held by the dancers. May Day is also celebrated in many
European countries as a labor holiday, comparable to Labor Day in the United
States. It was especially significant in the Soviet Union and other
Communist countries. Observance of the holiday by some workers in Europe and
the U.S. probably dates from the celebration of May Day by the first
congress (1889) of the Second International, an assembly of socialist and
labor parties.
