Can anyone suggest a field trip for my course  "Violence in the Community"?  I am having 2 panels of speakers during the semester: law enforcement professionals talking on terrorism, gangs and domestic violence; member of the press; crime victim, psychotherapist; and advocate for mentally impaired offenders.

Sarah:

For a really extreme case of violence—obviously from an historical perspective—you might consider taking the class to the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC.  I actually take my Race/Ethnic Relations class there from Indiana.  The museum has more directly relevance to a race/ethnicity class, perhaps…..but if students have studied theories of violence, you could have them focus on Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass) and on the videotaped testimonials at the end of the museum, and then have then discuss/write about what theories of community violence help to examine this form of violence.

If you have a local chapter of the Anti-Defamation League, you might also see if there are any local synagogues that have been attacked recently and—if so—ask if someone from ADF would meet you there to discuss anti-Semitic incidents.  ADF produces a document every year on anti-Semitic violence—usually in the range of 1,500 to 1,800 violence or harassing incidents per year in the U.S.

Just a few thoughts…
