Many teachers here take their students to the prison.  I haven't done it yet, and I guess the available spots fill up fast.  The students stay in one room and they bring in a couple of prisoners for a Q & A session.  I think the students have to have clean criminal records to go on the trip.

Can anyone suggest a field trip for my course  "Violence in the Community"?  I am having 2 panels of speakers during the semester: law enforcement professionals talking on terrorism, gangs and domestic violence; member of the press; crime victim, psychotherapist; and advocate for mentally impaired offenders.

I also would like to put together a field-trip related to social class and stratification.  ….  Does anyone do a similar field trip or something better and if so, how does it actually work?

I have a colleague who takes a class to a homeless shelter.  He has them line up three articulate people in advance who serve as a panel (I believe he pays them an honorarium as consultants) and they talk to the students about life on the streets.
