I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 that has been a good computer for the price. However, I think the customer support offered by Dell has decreased immensely during the three years I've had my computer.
I have also heard great things about the Toshiba laptops - particularly the model that functions as a writing tablet. If I were going to buy a new computer I would check out the reviews at pcworld.com and consumer reports. When you combine the reviews, you can get a good idea of the brands and features you want to consider and the price you will have to pay for them.
