A related strategy I use in senior thesis is a very informal "discourse" analysis. I have done this in various ways but, usually, I give them a list of questions about the type of discourse and common features of various types of articles. Some of these questions are at http://www.ilstu.edu/~kmckinne/soc300/analysesocdisc.htm. I ask them to look at popular magazines, newspapers, web sites, and scholarly sociological  journals (I may provide some from my office or have them go to the library after I give some titles) on their own. They are to respond to the questions. Then, in class (sometimes we only do it in class), in small groups, they discuss the questions and reach some consensus. I may bring journals to class too. Then we have a full group discussion of the main, common characteristics of scholarly (esp. soc) and nonscholarly sources and materials (writing these features on the board or overhead. They are then reminded that they must use scholarly ones for the thesis.

Hello Everyone,
I have an exceedingly hard time getting my students (including senior sociology majors!) to understand what is (and is not) a scholarly sociological source acceptable for a research paper. Now I am thinking of simply distributing a list of "pre-approved" peer-reviewed sociological journals. Does anybody happen to have such a list you could email me per attachment?

Thanks
