We use Canon copiers and they have an area where we can enter in e-mail account
information for authentication. If you can do POP3 and IMAP with your mail
service, there would hopefully be a way to set the copier up with an e-mail
account for that purpose.

So far since switching to google apps our Lanier copier / scanner
combo will not e-mail out a scan. We can still send to a shared
folder, but that isn't quite as convenient as getting the file in your
e-mail.
