Didn't know if anyone noticed or not, but the revised DMCA also covers ripping
DVD's.

>From avclub.com:

"Equally important are the new relaxed restrictions on ripping content from
DVDs, which the "digital civil liberties group" Electronic Frontier
Foundation<http://www.eff.org/press/archives/2010/07/26> is celebrating as a
major win for all video artists. Under the DMCA's new wording, anyone
extracting excerpts from DVDs to create content for "non-commercial purposes"
is well within their legal rights-which means that you're now free to make all
of the Mel Gibson YouTube mash-ups you want without fear of being in violation.
While the exemption only applies to clips that fall under "fair use," it's a
major reversal on a policy that has always declared it illegal to rip DVDs for
any purpose whatsoever. " -

Wouldn't the contract you signed to get the phone trump an interpretation of
DRM? This latest decision doesn't really give you any more rights, it just
means fewer are being taken away by the, IMHO, bad legislation. In any event
if you signed a contract where you agreed that you would only use the phone
with carrier's official software (most have some kind of stipulation to that
effect) then the "e-fuse" would only be enforcing the contract that you agreed
to. The bottom line is that if you want to use "their" phone (in most of these
deals the carrier is paying the majority if not all of the upfront cost on the
phone itself) on "their" network then you have to abide by "their" terms.
Even if you have the "right" to do what you want with your phone it doesn't
mean the carrier has to support you when you brick your phone.

I'm not defending the carriers, but I don't think this is going to make much
difference and won't be trying to jailbreak or root my phone any time soon. :)

Woops, meant to say "new method" - the technology itself seems to have been
developed circa 6 years ago.

Wonder if this will reach the Android community. For example, the Droid X uses
new technology called "eFuse" which physically disables the circuitry that
allows the phone to boot if the bootrom can't be verified as an "official"

Also, there is a typo in the first sentence that bothered me throughout the
