Try Denatured Alcohol.  It is used to thin varnish.  Rubbing alcohol, etc. will 
not work.  Only Denatured!  I have even used it to remove permanent marker from 
LCD screens.  I have NEVER had it damage anything I use it on.

If you resort to running compound, I would get the kind that is for 
clear coat paints.
