Canon makes a 55-200mm lens that works well and is relatively cheap. I don't remember the actual price I paid, but it was cheaper than some of the premium lenses.
I also recommend, for the future, an external flash. I get MUCH better results and far more flexibility with an external flash than I do the on-camera flash. If you want to try a prime lens, the 50mm prime I mentioned with the 1.8 aperture is only $90. It has a plastic body. They make a metal one with a 1.2 aperture, but it's $300+.
