It's pretty easy to put together a relatively inexpensive system yourself. For
example, you can install some motion-detecting IP-based cameras that will
e-mail or txt you when any of your pre-defined parameters are breached.
Depending on how complex you want to go, some systems also have contacts that
will tie in to other external detection devices such as door/window contact
switches as well as to auto-dialers (though I believe it is illegal to have an
auto-dialer call 911 or other emergency services directly).

Subject: [tech-geeks] OT-home security systems

I'm researching home security systems and I thought I'd see if any of
you had feedback. From what I can tell so far, it seems that you have
to be careful about what company you choose. The hardware can be
proprietary and service bad after you are locked into a contract.
Most of it seemed to scream, "buyer beware".

Thanks in advance
Pam
