I concur with Jim's advice. I recently did a restore (of a 1.5) and all went
quite smoothly. However, at some point you must go in and edit your
configuration.php file (using an ftp client) to match your database information
as the two times I've done this restore, through a move and through a rebuild,
the database information has been left blank. I had to enter the username, the
name of the database, and further down near the end of the config file I needed
to enter the password for the database. Be sure you have that information on
hand.
Or check with Jim :)) or Michael Bendorf who seem to have a good handle on
these things. I am a Joomla learner.

Since you have a JoomlaPack backup, I would put the wounded box aside
and install Joomla 1.0 on a new/different box and use JoomlaPack to
restore the original website. Then after the Joomla 1.0 site is back up,
then go through the upgrade process to move to 1.5.
