Their technical term is "RG"-residential gateway. My brother in law installs
Uverse so I know quite a bit about the technicalities of installs from talking
to him.

They can run ip connections over the coax or cat5. I've changed my internal
subnet and just rebooting the tv set top boxes got them going again. The whole
thing runs over just 1 pair back to the neighborhood box which has fiber direct
run to it.

When AT&T is prepping new subdivisions where new houses are being built they
run fiber direct to the house now.

I just wish they'd get the bandwidth upgrade done in my area so I could have
more than 2 HD streams. It's coming, they're doing it other places.

the one thing I wish I would do to my poor house is to run Cat5
everywhere - just dont have the drive to pull it

the Uverse installer takes advantage of any type of data connection
available. I have the DVR running to the processor via Coax, another
set top box on coax and a third set top via a pair of copper. The
phone, coax, and Ethernet can all hook up to the processor (home
router).
