We were troubleshooting slow logins and determined that it is best (for speed)
to not redirect anything. We do have a SAN and every student has a profile that
maps a drive letter to a home folder on that SAN. So when a student logs in
they get a drive letter J: and they are used to saving things to that drive
letter and not My Documents. This way, there is no copying of files form the
local machine to the network upon logon, the files are already on the SAN. On
slow XP machines we also noticed a big improvement by turning off desktop
search.

Are you redirecting Home Folders or My Documents to a network share via group
policy?

Mmmmm... that's an interesting observation. I've never thought to clear the
cache before creating a default profile from the user's profile I've cloned to
created the Default Profile in XP. Makes sense.

I'm not sure what you mean by "setting" a default profile. All of the machines
have a default profile. On XP I've caught myself creating an overly large
default profile by copying the profile from the user I used to set the machine
up which contained cached copies of the java installer etc...

On these machines however I'm pretty sure the default profile it's copying is
rather small in size.

XP even sometimes takes a few minutes if a new user logs in. Is it possible
that setting a default profile on a machine would make a difference?

Subject: [tech-geeks] slow Windows 7 logins

There's many threads out there on the Internet about slow Windows 7 logins and
many talk about this weird solid background glitch. I'm using the stock Win7
default wallpaper so that's not my issue. If a new user logs onto a machine
causing it to build a new profile, on some of our machines that could be
minutes. I recently noticed this happening in our Vista lab as well so it's
not specific to Win7 but something with the new architecture I guess.

Anybody have any stories of fixing slow login problems?
